I tell you what… The venue and promoter were happy as they managed to completely sell out the Jazz Café twice in one day with both a Matinée and Evening performances to capitalise on the demand to see the Legendary Wu-Tang emcee.
The only setback is the 57 year old GZA had to pace himself and couldn’t deliver a full all guns blazing concert for his fans.
Saying that, GZA’s mere presence alongside the brilliant Phunky Nomads live band (Led by ODB’s older brother & GZA’s cousin Ramsey Jones) definitely adds additional life to GZA and Wu-Tang’s musical catalogue.
Hearing GZA run through some classic songs and verses such as “Triumph” was absolutely a rare delight which us Hip Hop heads should never take for granted.
Although there was no tease of new music, highlights included GZA performing classic Wu-Tang songs such as “Protect Ya Neck” and a rendition of ODB’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” in tribute to his fallen family member as well as performing his own classics such as “4th Chamber” from the timeless “Liquid Swords” Album.
GZA’s style is very lyrical so don’t expect to see him get super energetic onstage but overall the GZA live experience presents an absolutely dope a night of Shaolin goodness.
