“Battle with dark thoughts/Sometimes I look into the mirror and dunno who’s looking back, still I charge forward.”
As a well seasoned artist who can truly claim the title ‘student of the game’, the passion for what he does becomes apparent for any listener with a love for words and the art form we know as hip hop.
Although Hip Hop may not be one of the more prominent genres in the UK specifically, WhoDat sees a much larger scope as far as his mindset goes. With goals that entail targeting and creating a niche audience through his uniqueness and being focused on places like Europe and Asia, where hip hop is larger than ever, the path ahead is clear.
‘SYM’ focuses primarily on being the perfect introductory song, boasting not only slick lyrical ability and delivery over an almost eerie piano sample, but the statement that there’s a place for the artist among any heavyweight world renowned MC regardless of location on the world map. WhoDat seems to have mastered the art of conveying his feelings in rap form on this rugged, stand out, up tempo single as well as showcasing his songwriting ability.
The track sees WhoDat joining forces with UK producer and friend, Freeman Carrington, who’s worked with hip hop royalty such as Wu-Tang amongst others. With a passion for sampling, Freeman has a talent to produce songs that never seem outdated whilst sticking to the elements of hip hop. A gritty piano loop with an almost cheeky skip to the drum pattern compliments WhoDat’s character and makes the production seem tailor made.
About WhoDat
Spending over a decade honing his craft, WhoDat ventured into the realm of becoming a solo artist after previously being part of a group and going by a different name. Feeling fully unlocked and able to unapologetically express his deepest and most personal feelings, it has breathed life into his craft in a way that he spent his years before chasing.
Born from parents of Caribbean descent, he uses their country’s native flags to cover his identity. ’ ”It’s not about my appearance. It’s about the music” is the idea, as he feels people can get too caught up in image which can overshadow the art. ‘The first thing you see when you communicate with a person is their face. A simple facial expression can change how you feel towards someone. If the face is hidden, all that’s left to judge is the art’.
Having partnered with independent record label RapXchange, WhoDat has been using their facilities to record his first album as a solo artist entitled ‘Not For Kids’. The album title, cover artwork, and debut single make his intentions quite clear. The music is not for the easily offended.
Working on compilations with other artists on the label, the no holds barred approach remains apparent on every song with a WhoDat feature.
Managing to work on the first compilation during the beginning of the global pandemic, the label put together and released a body of work entitled ‘Lockdown: 1st Wave’. The label plans to release “2nd Wave” and are in the process of mixing down the project. Part 1 can be found now on all streaming platforms.
