Once we got flipping pancakes out of the way, it was time to head down to the World Famous Jazz Café in Camden to see one of Hip Hop’s most iconic producers: Queens New York Native Large Professor alongside veteran Rap producer Statik Selektah.
Their MC/DJ chemistry is fantastic evolving from years of touring together. Large Professor is one of those producers whose beats translate really well on to the live stage while still maintaining that vintage classic Boom Bap feel.
Large Pro transitioned seamlessly from Main Source (The group he debut with) that first exposed us to (a pre-Illmatic) Nas on the Legendary posse cut “Live at the Barbeque” all the way through his later solo cuts from his incredible discography.
Personal highlights for me were his performances of “Mad Scientist” and a sing along version of “Looking at the front door” giving us one of those rare opportunities to experience a classic Hip hop record live in person, immediately transporting you back (If you’re an old head like me lol) to a time when the market wasn’t so flooded and you could have your favourite tracks on loop for hours on end, until you could perfectly recited every lyric off the top of your head.
Overall this was great performance from a seasoned pro on the mic, leaving any younger emcees with much to admire in regards to capturing an intimate UK audience and taking them on a 60 minute Boom Bap odyssey.
After Large Professor left the stage to meet and greet his fans. Statik selektah treated us to some exclusives tracks from his up coming album.
What a night of Pancakes and Classic Hip Hop music!
