Somer­set based rap­per Chiron Lox­ton drops his brand new album ‘Mixed Emo­tions’. This is the third album to come from the rising rap­per, show­cas­ing his ver­sat­il­ity and skills as an artist.

We catch up with him to find out more.

For those who have not heard of you, tell us a bit about how you star­ted in rap?

I was always mak­ing beats through­out the school peri­od of my life and took an interest in cre­at­ive writ­ing & spoken word. As I grew into my con­fid­ence, I decided to take this pas­sion fur­ther and focus more on estab­lish­ing myself as a music artist. HipHop/Rap music, I felt like I could vent and chan­nel more ideas through lyr­ics with this genre.

Con­grats on album num­ber 3! ‘Mixed Emo­tions’ is 24 tracks of fire! How long did it take you to put together?

‘Mixed Emo­tions’ has taken me about 2 years to put togeth­er. With mak­ing con­nec­tions from my pre­vi­ous album ‘Out In The Trees’, it did end up becom­ing a much big­ger pro­ject than expec­ted which was a pleas­ant sur­prise to me!

The album is extremely exper­i­ment­al, how import­ant is it for you to be ver­sat­ile when it comes to pro­duc­tion and exper­i­ment­ing with dif­fer­ent genres?

I think it is very import­ant to stay unpre­dict­able and try new areas to see if there might be a style of beat that you nev­er would have ori­gin­ally thought about. I always find it pretty fun to try and find a flow on dif­fer­ent BPMs to see if I can make an impact on the track. I love trav­el­ling and exper­i­en­cing dif­fer­ent cul­tures, which I think makes me quite open to try­ing out a few dif­fer­ent genres whilst main­tain­ing my own artist­ic style.

Are there any tracks on the album that are par­tic­u­larly close to your heart? Which ones and why?

‘Reflect­ive Prac­tice’ is pretty close to me as I really enjoy try­ing to voice my per­spect­ive on top­ics in a poet­ic way. The samples on this piece are from close friends and people I have encountered on my travels so I per­son­ally find it quite warm­ing to hear a famil­i­ar voice on the track. ‘Someone’ & ‘Take It Easy’ con­tain a lot of happy memor­ies for me which is cool to remin­isce back on whenev­er they come on. ‘I’m With Everything’ was one of my first tracks I recor­ded on this album, and it was excit­ing to have IAM3AM fea­tured on anoth­er song off the suc­cess of our pre­vi­ous work on ‘Out In The Trees (Wish Me Well)’.

You have some great Glob­al col­labs on the album, how did these come about?

By work­ing with some of the pro­du­cers on my pre­vi­ous album, I man­aged to make con­nec­tions that would end up on this new pro­ject. A lot of my music influ­ence is from Amer­ica so I thought I would try and com­bine UK & USA artist styles togeth­er. From trav­el­ling around Europe, I dis­covered a few pro­du­cers who made more dance type beats and I wanted to ref­er­ence their styles with my pro­ject as I also like listen­ing to this genre.

Tell us a bit about your song­writ­ing pro­cess, where do you get your inspiration?

I do get a lot of my inspir­a­tion from trav­el­ling and meet­ing new people. I like to recol­lect memor­ies and paint visu­al pic­tures for the listen­er. Whenev­er I would like to be more reflect­ive on the track, I would always go towards my favour­ite rap­pers and a few bands to read into their lyr­ic­al content.

What do you want listen­ers to take away from ‘Mixed Emotions’?

I would like listen­ers to take away that we all exper­i­ence ups and downs through­out life’s jour­ney and it’s up to us to embrace these and con­nect with as many people as we feel neces­sary to improve ourselves as an indi­vidu­al. Mixed Emo­tions is a pro­ject express­ing human beha­vi­or at vari­ous emo­tion­al levels. From let­ting go of everything and allow­ing the night to run wild, to sit­ting on a beach in the even­ing glow reflect­ing on your character.

What have you got com­ing up?

I’ll always be work­ing on singles, but my main aim next is to focus on my live show cap­ab­il­it­ies and get myself booked into gigs to show­case this album to a live audi­ence and see what sort of feed­back I can get from it! I would love to get myself into some slots at fest­ivals as this set­ting was the ini­tial spark for me to pur­sue music.
