NEW MUSIC | TORONTO’S BIGGEST ONE TO WATCH KEYNES WOODS DROPS ‘TIM BURT’

Toronto-based artist Keynes Woods returns with new single ‘Tim Burt’, the second drop in the run up to his long-awaited EP ‘Kongo Kane’.

Keynes has been cel­eb­rated for his exper­i­ment­al voice and play­ful aes­thet­ics since the start of his music­al career but it wasn’t until his epic per­form­ance in the COL­ORS box early last year where he was launched into the spotlight.

To stoke the fires for what is to be an excit­ing 2020 for the ascend­ing Con­golese altern­at­ive rap­per, late 2019 saw Keynes release what he calls a “warm” up with his ener­get­ic single ‘Spir­itu­al Heal­ing’ — a con­fid­ent track laced with trap-infused drum pat­terns and eer­ie piano flour­ishes, fea­tur­ing the rising col­lect­ive of Cana­dian artists.

’Tim Burt’, the sig­na­ture single from the pro­ject drops next Fri­day fol­lowed by a music video shortly after. The track is about giv­ing cred­it where cred­its due — Keynes wants to shout out all the people it takes to put music out. “A lot of artists get props for the num­bers on the board, but oth­er areas of their game are ignored”, he uses this clev­er meta­phor to reflect on his back­ground as an ath­lete and ball-play­er and trans­fer it to music. He wants to cel­eb­rate the well-roun­ded trench work­ers that may not get as much love as the flashy one-note players.

He’s now step­ping into 2020 with fresh music and is etch­ing towards his highly anti­cip­ated EP ‘Kongo Kane’ set to release on the 28th Feb. The 5‑track EP, pro­duced by Chan­ning “Rekkzone” Ander­son show­cases Keynes in phe­nom­en­al form, the title also serving as a new nick­name (and a way for people to say his name right). Kane demon­strates a lyr­ic­sm far bey­ond his years, invent­ive flows and intro­spect­ive bars — this is Keynes Woods on a com­pletely dif­fer­ent level.
