Kid Acne is back and, you guessed it, rid­ing the ‘CREST OF A WAVE’, team­ing with pro­du­cer Spec­tac­u­lar Dia­gnostics (West­side Gunn, Vic Spen­cer, Con­way the Machine, Nolan the Ninja) and Nosaj of alt-rap her­oes New King­dom for a sound­clash out of God’s Own County. In no uncer­tain terms, Eddy Fresh is “done with the L plates, done with the chump change”.

Ahead of his fourth stu­dio album ‘HAVE A WORD’, fea­tur­ing Juga-Naut and Juice Aleem, Kid Acne’s ‘CREST…’ run rep­res­ents some­thing of a reunion, hav­ing been part of Lex’s ‘LEX­OLI­UM’ series back in 2001, and 2007’s Lex LP ‘ROMANCE AIN’T DEAD’ being cel­eb­rated as “an injec­tion of stoop­id Steel City fresh­ness”. An instantly dis­tinct­ive back cata­logue of DIY, post-Mil­len­ni­um hip-hop, has gone from pour­ing ‘COUN­CIL POP’ to lead­ing the charge of ‘ATTACK THE MONO­LITH’ as part of the cult Mon­grels (“thrill­ingly they rein­vig­or­ate crunchy old school boom bap” – Mojo). The York­shire cun­ning, speak your clout and ded­ic­a­tion to hip-hop’s essence has run par­al­lel with his stal­wart status with­in the inter­na­tion­al Street Art movement.

His works dec­or­at­ing the globe, Kid Acne has painted large-scale mur­als across con­tin­ents and exhib­ited extens­ively over the past two dec­ades. The new album ties in with his latest solo exhib­i­tion, also called ‘HAVE A WORD’, hos­ted by S1 Artspace of Shef­field through­out Septem­ber. “Hav­ing made art and music in vari­ous guises over the years, these seem­ingly dis­par­ate ele­ments have gen­er­ally occu­pied unre­lated spaces in my stu­dio prac­tice, des­pite both being an equal driv­ing force in my cre­at­ive out­put. The aim of the exhib­i­tion is to con­nect the dots through the explor­a­tion of lyr­ics and let­ter­ing, util­ising lim­ited resources and a more DIY mindset”.
