Otis Mensah is “a young story-teller-rapper-poet with a talent for drawing the poetic from the everyday happenings in his life.”
The alternative hip-hop artist has risen from a new wave; age and era, embodying a contemporary, poetic take on hip-hop music. The music he creates sheds light on existential commonalities discovered through introspection with often off-kilter lyrics, accompanied by a sentimental vibe.
On the live circuit he has recently supported an abundance of various artists across the UK including; Arrested Development, Brother Ali, P.O.S, Abstract Orchestra, Lowkey, and Intch (The King Blues.)
His latest single ‘Oh Jane’ collaborates with Berlin-based producer The Intern, taking the listener on a mellow and melancholic journey. The song cruises through a hazy, experimental jazz-rap sound with a brooding and poetic depiction of the mental burdens in modern-day society. It touches on themes of materialism, nostalgia, isolation and depression. Otis shifts seamlessly from spoken word to a stream-of-conscious type rap cadence with volatile delivery. The music visuals act as a representation of contemplation & introspection with a minimalist undertone.
Otis Mensah’s music almost appears as a stream of consciousness, as though he is documenting a journey of thoughts, lyrically however drowned in playful imagery and unconventional symbolism left open to interpretation.
As an artist he perseveres in connecting to an audience that relates to his writing and shares a mutual interest for thought-provoking lyricism and expressionism.
