Interview: Who is Salome MC?

Q. What inspired to you to pick up the mic and start rap­ping?

This would be hard to fit in one or two reas­ons. My whole child­hood and adoles­cent life, the way it worked out kind of led me to this. I was already writ­ing poetry and per­form­ing it for my ima­gin­ary audi­ence using my fist as a mic, when I met a fel­low rap­per in Iran who intro­duced me to a stu­dio and after that it just happened.

Q. What chal­lenges did you face as a female rap­per from Iran and how has these chal­lenges affected you as an artist?

I wouldn’t say I faced many chal­lenges just because I was a female. I might be the first female rap­per to ever step in a stu­dio in Iran, yes, but from people around me I mostly got cour­age after they got over the sur­prise. The oth­er chal­lenges that you might guess was there for my male coun­ter­parts too. Of course you get a cer­tain amount of sex­ist com­ments from lack of com­mon sense or edu­ca­tion, but that is a glob­al prob­lem. For­tu­nately over the years I man­aged to build a small but under­stand­ing audi­ence who are far from that kind of atti­tude.

Q. Your track Drunk Shah, Drunk Eld­er cov­ers the top­ic of the peoples’ fight for free­dom and justice in Iran. Do you feel that in the last few years there has been much of a change with­in Iran for the masses?

Def­in­itely. For most part it was the eco­nom­ic­al crisis, skyrock­et prices and lack of medi­cine. The polit­ic­al impris­on­ment and silen­cing the activist/artists was always there but I think we get to know more about them thanks to social media and Inter­net in gen­er­al, so people are more aware of the rights and wrongs, I am hop­ing all of this will reflect in the new government’s policies. If Row­hani does not meet the expect­a­tions, people would not be silent.

Q. There are a great num­bers of rap­pers in Iran or from Iran that rap about the issues that affect the people in the coun­try, such as Hich­kas, your­self, Shah­in Najafi etc . How do you feel the hip hop move­ment in Iran as changed over the last few years?

I am not a very good per­son to ask this, since I do not fol­low the Ira­ni­an hip-hop scene that much. I do not con­sider myself a part of that circle, though I might be cat­egor­ized inev­it­ably. When I first star­ted I was excited to be a part of some­thing new and power­ful that has the poten­tial to change things in loc­al and then state level, but with power comes great respons­ib­il­ity and I think most of us could not handle that very well. I leave it to that.

Q. Do you feel that if the gov­ern­ment of Iran lifts the ban of hip hop that the artists will be less polit­ic­al?

I think those who have social con­scious will keep doing what they are doing, and those who abused socio/political issues just to get atten­tion will find a dif­fer­ent way of self-pro­mot­ing.

Q. As a female rap­per and see­ing the oppres­sion of women in Iran do you feel hip hop can be used as a tool to empower women?

As you said Hip-hop is just a tool like edu­ca­tion, it can be used to make people aware of their rights and their pos­i­tion, real­ize their own poten­tial and at the end, empower­ment, yes. But I am not one to speak big. I think change comes slowly and loc­ally, so instead of talk­ing big and throw slo­gans, I prefer to meta­ph­or­ize my own exper­i­ences and hope that I inspire a per­son or two.

Q. Lastly what can we expect from Salome in the near future?

I have been doing a lot lately that fit into my goals in life, but do not fit in Hip-Hop neces­sar­ily. Do you hear “It’s big­ger than hip hop, hip hop, hip hop” tune too? 🙂

I am explor­ing dif­fer­ent ways of expres­sion and com­mu­nic­a­tion since I moved to Japan and I have been mak­ing exper­i­ment­al audio/visual pieces. I also have a documentary/fiction fusion pro­ject that I am work­ing on right now and hop­ing to fin­ish it in a few months. It will sum up what I learned from my exper­i­ence in Japan, and I hope to be inspir­a­tion­al in a dif­fer­ent way than what I have been doing till now. Being an MC is more than just rap­ping, it is to move crowds with sin­cere com­mu­nic­a­tion and bor­der­less inspir­a­tion. I will explore dif­fer­ent ways of doing it and hope to be worthy of my listen­ers.

چه چیزی باعث شد که میکروفون به دست بگیری و رپ کنی؟ .Q

جواب دادن این سوال با یکی دو دلیل مشکل است. راهی که در کودکی و نوجوانی ام طی کردم من را به این سو سیر داد. مدتی بود که اشعار خودم رو می نوشتم و برای حضار خیالی در حالی که مشتم میکروفونم بود اجرا می کردم که با یک رپ خوان آشنا شدم که من را با استودیو و ضبط آشنا کرد و بعد از آن همه چیز خود به خود شکل گرفت.

چه چالش هایی را به عنوان یک رپر زن در ایران تجربه کردی و این چالش ها چگونه روی تو تاثیر گذاشتند؟ .Q

گفتن اینکه سختی های زیادی را فقط به خاطر زن بودنم کشیدم نادرست خواهد بود. شاید من اولین دختری بودم که برای رپ خواندن پا در استودیو گذاشت، ولی اطرافیانم پس از گذراندن حیرت اولیه اکثرا من را تشویق می کردند. اهم چالش هایی که در جامعه ما حضور داشت برای رپرهای مرد هم مطرح بود و هست. البته نظرات آلوده به تبعیض جنسی که از نادانی سرچشمه می گیرند را تا حدی همیشه باید تحمل کنیم ولی این یک مشکل جهانی هست. خوشبختانه من توانستم در طول سال ها شوندگانی داشته باشم که شاید از نظر کمیت زیاد نباشند ولی همه دارای عقل سلیمند و دور از این نوع رفتارها.

آهنگ تو به نام «شاه مست و شیخ مست» در مورد مبارزه مردمی در برای آزادی و عدالت در ایران است. آیا فکر می کنی که در سالهای اخیر تغییراتی برای مردم در ایران حاصل شده است؟ .Q

صد البته. بیشتر این تغییرات مربوط به گرانی و نبود داروهای خارجی و بحران اقتصادی می شود. زندانی های سیاسی و ساکت کردن فعالان اجتماعی و هنرمندان همیشه در برنامه کاری حکومت بود ولی با وجود اینترنت و رسانه های اجتماعی مثل فیسبوک بیشتر خبردار می شویم و در نتیجه مردم بهتر می توانند خوب و بد را تشخیص بدهند و قضاوت کنند. من امیدوارم همه اینها در سیاستگذاری های حکومت جدید انعکاس گردد. اگر آقای روحانی انتظارات اولیه مردم را برآورده نکند، مردم ساکت نخواهند نشست.
رپرهای زیادی هستند از ایران که در مورد اتفاقاتی که مردم را تحت تاثیر قرار می دهد رپ می کنند چون هیچکس، خودت، شاهین نجفی و غیره. فکر می کنی جنبش هیپ هاپ در ایران در سال های اخیر چگونه تغییر یافته است؟

من شخص مناسبی نیستم برای جواب دادن این سوال چون زیاد صحن رپ فارسی را دنبال نمی کنم و سالهاست خودم را جدا کرده ام، هرچند می دانم به ناچار تحت این عنوان کاتگرویزه می شوم. اوایل کارم خیلی هیجان زده بودم که می توانم بخشی از یک جنبش جدید و پرقدرت باشم که پتانسیل تغییر دادن را در سطح محلی و بعد کشوری دارد، اما با «قدرت» مسئولیت عظیمی هم همراه است که فکر می کنم اکثر ماها نتوانستیم از عهده آن به خوبی برآییم. بیشتر از این لازم نیست بگویم.

به نظرت اگر حکومت اجرای هیپ هاپ را آزاد کند رپ خوانان کمتر سیاسی خواهند بود؟ .Q

فکر می کنم آنهایی که از نظر اجتماعی آگاه هستند کار خود را ادامه خواهند داد و کسانی که از وقایع اجتماعی/سیاسی سو استفاده کردند تا توجه ها را جلب کنند، راه های دیگرای را برای مطرح کردن خود خواهند یافت.

به عنوان یک رپ خوان زن که فشار روی زن ها را در ایران می بیند آیا فکر می کنی که بتوان هیپ هاپ را به عنوان ابزاری برای قدرت بخشی به زنان به کار برد؟
همانطور که خودت اشاره کردی هیپ هاپ فقط یک ابزار است مانند آموزش و پرورش، می توان آن را برای آگاهی بخشی انسان ها در مورد حقوق و موقعیت خودشان به کار برد تا متوجه تواناهایی بالقوه خود شوند و در آخر، قدرتمتد. بله. ولی من دوست ندارم گنده گنده صحبت کنم. فکر می کنم تغییر آرام و به صورت محلی صورت می گیرد و در نتیجه ترجیح می دهم به جای شعار دادن و دادن زدن، تجربه های خودم رو به استعاره بیان کنم و امیدوار باشم الهامبخش یکی دو نفر باشم.

در آخر، چه کارهایی را از سالومه در آینده نزدیک خواهیم دید؟
بعد از آلبوم «من هستم رسما» مدتی هیپ هاپ را تعطیل کردم و دارم کارهای دیگری را که به زندگیم معنی می بخشند انجام می دهم. از وقتی به ژاپن آمدم روش های متعدد بیان و رابطه را غیر از کلمات تجربه می کنم و پروژه های صوتی/تصویری متعددی را انجام دادم که در فستیوال ها و نمایشگاه ها اکران می شوند. همچنین در حال حاضر روی یک پروژه مستند داستانی و تجربی کار می کنم که امیدوارم در چند ماه آینده تمام کنم. این پروژه همه چیزهایی را که در زندگی در ژاپن به من یاد داد خلاصه خواهد کرد و امیدوارم به نوع دیگری برای مخاطبان کارم الهام بخش باشد. یک ام.سی. بودن فقط به رپ کردن نیست، باید بتوانی با رابطه مخلصانه و الهام بدون مرز انسان ها را به جنبش واداری. به کاوش روش های متعدد برای این هدف ادامه خواهم داد و امیدوارم بتوانم از این به بعد هم شایسته مخاطبان عزیزم باشم.
