EVENT | PASS THE TORCH FOR TY RETURNS TO BRIXTON FOR ITS SIXTH ANNUAL CELEBRATION

On Thursday 20 August, the UK hip hop com­munity will come togeth­er in Brix­ton for the sixth annu­al Pass the Torch for Ty, cel­eb­rat­ing the life, birth­day and last­ing leg­acy of the much-loved rap­per Ty Chijioke.

Tak­ing place at Arch 55, next to Ty’s Brix­ton mur­al painted by the late artist Bunny Bread, the event will con­tin­ue Ty’s vis­ion of shin­ing a light on grass­roots UK music.

Ori­gin­ally cre­ated by Ty in 2019, Pass the Torch provides a per­form­ance space for emer­ging and estab­lished rap­pers, sing­ers, DJs and oth­er cre­at­ives with­in the often-under­rep­res­en­ted grass­roots UK hip hop scene.

The event will fea­ture a care­fully cur­ated line-up of musi­cians per­form­ing along­side the Pass the Torch house band. It offers artists an oppor­tun­ity to show­case their tal­ent, con­nect with the com­munity and cel­eb­rate hip hop cul­ture, with DJs set­ting the atmo­sphere before and after the live performances.

This year’s line-up includes Essah, Jaz Kah­ina, Kam, FRSHRZ, Fero, Tina La, Ellisse and Only Son, plus a spe­cial guest.

The even­ing will be hos­ted by Peaches, with music from DJ Nikki Stylus and DJ Snuff.

In keep­ing with Ty’s fierce com­mit­ment to sup­port­ing and uplift­ing his com­munity, pro­ceeds from the annu­al event will be donated to Brix­ton Soup Kit­chen. The char­ity, which was close to Ty’s heart, provides essen­tial sup­port to people exper­i­en­cing home­less­ness, poverty and food insec­ur­ity across South Lon­don and beyond.

All torch­bear­ers are invited to come down, cel­eb­rate Ty’s leg­acy, sup­port grass­roots UK music and help keep his vis­ion burn­ing bright.
