NEW MUSIC | AND WHAT? LDN RELEASES DEBUT COMPILATION “VOL. 1”

After 4 years and 100+ events all over the UK, 2015 founded South London collective And What? LDN launched their first compilation album “Vol. 1” on Fr, 13/03/20.

Best known for one of the capital’s top live nights, their monthly cypher fuelled Hip Hop/Grime event Rise of the MC at renowned Hip Hop venue Chip Shop Brixton, the crew of young creatives has hosted names like De La Soul’s DJ Maseo, Ty, Pato Banton, Logic People’s Army and Toya Delazy at their gigs, as well as Greentea Peng, Mysdiggi (Mystro), Shumba Youth (Reggae Roast), LeeN (Lyricist Lounge fame) and now Harleighblu.

The collective that started with a showcase/open mic event in Herne Hill’s Off The Cuff, which morphed into a monthly gig, has since landed three live music & club night residencies at Grow Hackney, Chip Shop and Hootananny, next to their 3+ years running music and street food festival, Congregate Brixton.

Hosting over 25 events a year, plus performances at e. g. V&A museum’s Late Night Festival and their own stages at Noisily Festival or Les Tropikantes Paris, the self-funded grassroots crew recently expanded to launching a video podcast and a show on NY based The Face Radio, while keeping a budding showcase Youtube channel.

Hellbent on helping artists and celebrating music of black origin in its various styles, And What? grew a core creative team with several in house acts which have now gathered on  their first record as a collective.

After a rapid growth in recent years, the initiative proudly presents its first compilation album “Vol. 1”, a culmination of their work and a journey through Hip Hop, Neo Soul and Bass. With a range of tracks recorded by their musicians, MCs, vocalists, producers and live electronic, And What? pays homage to its underground movements’ ever-expanding spectrum:

“This release represents a mere snippet of the eclectic medley of musical genres and styles present within our collective. Our events are designed to be a musical journey and we hope to capture that essence with this studio produced mixtape.” - And What?

Celebrating “Vol. 1”, And What? hosted a launch party at Hootananny Brixton on the same day, headlined by neo-soul rising star and this years’ SXSW playing act Harleighblu, alongside freestyle specialist Fattima Mahdi and And What? resident DJs Gonan, Calaida and JOEL DEEP.

“Vol. 1” can be streamed and downloaded on all platforms.
