NEW MUSIC | EKITI SOUND NEW SINGLE ‘CHAIRMAN’ OUT NOW

A must-listen for anyone who appreciates genre-defying, boundary-pushing music from Africa, Ekiti Sound is back with the highly anticipated new single ‘Chairman’, out now on Crammed Discs.

Tipped as a modern slice of afrojuju and electronica, Chairman is the first single from ‘Drum Money’, the sophomore album from Lagos/ London-based artist Ekiti Sound.

Picking up the pace as if it never left, Ekiti Sound teams up with Nyege Nyege’s first lady of rap, Aunty Rayzor to deliver a snare-rattling, Harlem renaissance-eque first release from his upcoming LP.

Shot in Lagos by FD Visualzz, the ‘Chairman’ video was partly inspired by the Leonardo DiCaprio meme from ‘Wolf of Wall Street’, in which he’s doing a robot dance at the party in a tuxedo.
Using a variety of props from past decades, the video was shot at Elephant House, an iconic building which is one of the very first skyscrapers built on Lagos Marina.

Leke aka Ekiti Sound, comments:

“It’s all about the imposter syndrome: a wolf in sheep’s clothing, or sheep in wolf’s clothing… affirmations and brainwashing bravado. The choreography was done by the amazing Rebby dance crew, the dancers for Made Kuti’s band. I grew up in a household full of sisters, so my boardroom is full of the sharpest female minds.”

Riding on top of horn blasts and drum rolls, Leke opens the track up in pidgin, running the Chairman Checklist, swiftly followed by Aunty Rayzor carrying the verses to hammer home the point. Her sharp lyrics and rapid Yoruba flow add an electrifyingly dynamic element to a beat that will get everyone moving.

Chairman pays musical homage to the childhood music of Ekiti Sound, afrojuju, and seemingly spiralling upwards in a crescendo of horns, fast percussive beats, dance commands, and soaring synths. Ekiti Sound brings together the best elements of afrojuju, afropop, rap, and electronica music to create a track sure to increase the anticipation of the new album ‘Drum Money’, out 23 June on Crammed Discs.
