CFC Studios, Birmingham, UK
Multiverse is a new, experimental event exploring the relationship between live music and digital worlds through kaleidoscopic interactive projections. This show is set to be held at CFC Studios in Birmingham on Thursday 25th August, as part of Gallery 37, a flagship development programme celebrating Birmingham’s Creative Future. This year’s cohort have been commissioned to create works on the theme of ‘roaming’.
This event — part digital art exhibition, part music showcase — aims to submerge its audience into a digital space in which guests will have the chance to control art projections using a Playstation controller throughout the course of the night, exploring the connection between physical and virtual art. Interactivity is a significant part of this event, where audience members have the opportunity to control projections, and therefore influence the experience for themselves and others.
A series of projections, including this forest-scape, has been built by the curator of Multiverse, world-building artist and musician DEMARAE. The visuals will interact and sync with the sounds of a line-up of Birmingham’s up and coming musical talent crossing hip-hop, R&B, and Amapiano genres, including CommonWealth Games opening ceremony singer Indigo Marshall, singer-songwriter ReRe, lyricist CreezOn, artist Shenâi, rapper Yonko Leck, singer-songwriter Odd Priest, musician Tarju Le’Sano, DJ sets by Rhexis and more.
Inspired by science fiction and retrofuturism, DEMARAE creates reflections of alternative realities in a stylised way, allowing players to experience new and familiar environments and take on adventures, both virtually and sonically. Envisioning potential futures, and the replication of ‘modern Midlands’ as a backdrop for virtual storytelling are commonplace in DEMARAE’s work.
His latest visual, a take on how the game GTA (Grand Theft Auto) might look if based in Birmingham has taken Twitter by storm. The artist has digitally built parts of Birmingham, and these areas will be playable at ‘Multiverse’ with the use of a Playstation controller.
Multiverse creator, DEMARAE says:
“Whenever I’ve been to live shows and raves and seen the visuals in the background — I always wonder what it’s like to jump into that world and explore it. Multiverse gives the audience a chance to explore multiple worlds..”
Multiverse is produced by Gallery37 alongside Punch Records. Nine young artists took part in Gallery 37’s 2021 two-week residency, tipped as Birmingham’s Creative Future. They have been commissioned to create brand new work that will be presented around Birmingham throughout August — October 2022, centred on the theme of ‘roaming’.
