Breakin’ Convention returns for its first live event since lockdown started. Over two days, this influential international festival of hip hop dance theatre presents an action-packed show, featuring three dynamic hip hop dance crews from across the UK.

Live and direct at Sadler’s Wells just when we need it most, Breakin’ Convention Social DisDancing is hosted by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist and Breakin’ Convention founder, Jonzi D.

Line-up features AIM, the explosive all-female popping crew, presenting Suspended, a new work exploring the experience of losing the ground beneath your feet, then finding the resilience to anchor once again. Birmingham-based O’Driscoll Collective premieres a powerful duet titled One%, looking at duality, the mind and the importance of mental health awareness. Using the style of breakin’, the work responds to society today and misunderstood emotions. Perennial Breakin’ Convention stalwarts and East London friends, the mighty Boy Blue complete the bill with an exciting new production, more details soon. Breakin’ Convention Social DisDancing runs nightly on Friday December 11 and Saturday December 12 with an additional afternoon show.

Are you Zoomed out? Are you bored of virtual entertainment? Do you want to see some real dance? With real bodies, real passion, in a real theatre? Well let’s start Breakin’ Convention!

Breakin’ Convention Artistic Director, Jonzi D said: “After this enforced sabbatical, it’s actually a surprise to be back home on the Sadler’s Wells stage in 2020. We need to experience and participate in live dance. It’s healing.”

In April 2020, Breakin’ Convention was scheduled to host its 17th festival at Sadler’s Wells, as well as The Ruggeds’ Between Us, due to take place last July at the Peacock Theatre. Sadly, both performances were cancelled due to the global coronavirus pandemic. Breakin’ Convention could still be seen via the Sadler’s Wells Digital Stage, with The Jazz re:freshed Sonic Orchestra screened on the May Bank Holiday, historically when the festival takes place.

Breakin’ Convention returns just in time, bringing hip hop dance theatre back onstage with socially distanced measures in place. Join Jonzi D, Boy Blue, AIM and the O’Driscoll Collective for some euphoric hip hop dance theatre this December.
