For the first time ever, we invite one of the UK’s most revered hip-hop acts to per­form his land­mark 2004 album in full backed by a live band of London’s finest jazz musicians.

Coun­cil Estate of Mind doc­u­ments in detail many of the hard­ships of liv­ing in early 21st cen­tury Bri­tain but it is laden with humour, wit and ground­break­ing social commentary.

The pro­duc­tion is a standout fea­ture, sampling heav­ily from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, the beats range from jumpy, ska-laden num­bers (“Coun­cil Estate of Mind”, “I’ll be Sur­prised”) to gui­tar-picked brood­ing pieces (“Day-To-Day Basis”, “Little Man pt. 1 and 2”) and, the two best songs on the album, fea­tur­ing some very classy soul samples and some astound­ing lyr­ics, in the form of “Who, Me?” and “That’s What I’m Gonna Do”.

Jack Steph­en­son Oliv­er of Vels Trio leads a band made up of play­ers from some of the most excit­ing break­out Lon­don jazz groups, who will arrange the ori­gin­al pro­duc­tions of this cult record.

Coun­cil Estate of Mind is one of the hand­ful of UK hip-hop LPs that’s remained fondly in the con­scious­ness of a wider audi­ence. – The Face Magazine
