Kabwasa’s debut album ‘Maiden Flight’ is out. This album features Kabwasa’s signature groovy style with his unique form of lyricism that makes him stand out in the hip-hop, r&b, and neo soul space. The intro track sets the overall theme of the record: to dream a life that has yet to come into existence.
This theme is nicely carried over into the next track that features rising r&b artist, Ayoni. Over the next few records, concluding with Slow It Down, the reality of being a dreamer sets in. With ‘Midnight Shift,’ Kabwasa is romanticizing his life beyond the bland lifestyle that his non-rapper life is providing. He discusses the difficulty of pretending like the rapper’s life is what he currently lives to all his fans while he knows he is struggling to get by.
The next song, ‘In My Head,’ further pushes the psychological aspect of this as Kabwasa discusses his own insecurities, asserting that he has to get out of his own head to progress out of this tough spot. After his ‘Slow It Down (Interlude), which ends with a heartfelt voicemail from Kabwasa’s father, the final tracks see a transition into a flashy, fun, groovy rapper lifestyle.
With two braggadocio tracks followed by ‘You Gon See’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love,’ Kabwasa concludes with this message to his fans: This is just the beginning. There is so much more on the way, and thank you for all your love and support. We’re growing together. Kabwasa’s new 2020 album ‘Maiden Flight’ is a refreshing, optimistic listen.
